Winter daylight falls across an oak dining table and a renovated kitchen with charcoal cabinetry, white quartz counters and warm wood floors.

Planning Your Kannapolis Christmas Season Around the Winterland Express

October 22, 2026

Village Park's Celebration of Lights opens Friday, November 13, and runs through December 30. The lights, the park and the parking are all free. The Winterland Express and the carousel need tickets, and the city sells train seats differently depending on the night.

From Sunday through Thursday, you can reserve a train time online. On Fridays, Saturdays and the week before Christmas, tickets are sold the same day at the park. Some 2026 nights can be booked ahead, and others mean showing up and buying at the gate. Downtown Kannapolis's December events fall on both kinds, so the train schedule shapes how the rest of the season fits together.

Why the train needs a plan

The Winterland Express is a g-24 scale replica of a CP Huntington engine, and the ride takes passengers past displays that count down the 12 Days of Christmas. In 2025 it carried 53,218 riders, up from 52,608 in 2024. The Independent Tribune reported that as a ridership record for Celebration of Lights.

Those numbers count train riders only. Many more people come to Village Park just to walk the lights, which Explore Cabarrus puts at more than 250,000 bulbs. Walking the light displays is free and open-ended. The train and the 1,800-light Italian-made carousel are the two ticketed rides.

How the ticket rules divide the week

Online train reservations opened October 14 at 9 a.m. through the city's Etix page for the 2026 Winterland Express. By the time this post publishes, booking has been open for about two weeks.

Night How train tickets work Lights hours
Sunday through Thursday Reserve online in advance 5:30 to 9 p.m.
Friday and Saturday Buy on site, day of 5:30 to 10 p.m.
Week before Christmas Buy on site, day of Regular hours for that night
Any night reservations are gone Walk-up tickets at the carousel or park building Regular hours for that night
Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day Closed Closed

Weeknights have shorter hours, but they're the only nights you can lock in a train time ahead. Weekend nights stay open an hour later, and that's also when the city says local craft vendors set up and food trucks sell food and drinks. A Saturday visit gives you the most going on in the park and the least certainty about the train.

On any night, the park also offers free photos with Santa, a holiday craft, s'mores around the fire pit and carols from the Kannapolis Singing Bears. None of these need a ticket, so they're easy to fit around whatever train time you get.

Opening night falls on a walk-up night

November 13 is a Friday. That means the biggest night of the season is also a same-day ticket night. The Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m. at Village Park, 700 West C Street, with live music. Fireworks follow at about 6:45 p.m., and admission is free.

The lights open at 5:30 that evening, an hour before the ceremony. That hour gives you time to buy train tickets at the park and park the car in the free Village Park lot. If you only want the train and not the ceremony, the first Sunday of the season, November 15, is the first night you can reserve online.

December's downtown calendar lands on both kinds of nights

Once the lights are running, the rest of the Kannapolis holiday calendar fills in around them. Here's how December's dated events line up with the train's ticket rules.

Tuesday, December 8: a reservable night. The Swanee Theatre hosts The Embers Christmas Show at 8 p.m., with doors at 7. The lights open at 5:30 on a weeknight, so you can book an early train online and still make the show.

Wednesday, December 9: a daytime event. Parks & Recreation's Senior Holiday Lunch is at City Hall, and tickets are $23 per person.

Friday, December 11 through Sunday, December 13: a train-themed weekend. The Swanee's free Holiday Model Train Display runs all three days, with evening and daytime hours. The Saturday in the middle is parade day, and Sunday the 13th is a reservable night at Village Park. A family that wants to see both the model trains and the Winterland Express can do both that Sunday and book the Express ahead.

Thursday, December 17: still reservable. A kids' holiday craft night is listed at Kannapolis Train Station, 201 South Main Street, at 6 p.m. for $12.

Friday, December 18 through Sunday, December 20: Christmas week begins. The Swanee stages A Christmas Carol over those three days, including a 3 p.m. matinee on December 20. This is also where the city's day-of ticket rule for the week before Christmas starts to apply at Village Park. A weekend matinee followed by an evening at the lights works, but plan to buy train tickets at the park.

Parade Saturday, hour by hour

The Kannapolis Christmas Parade steps off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 12. It's a nighttime parade, with floats and marching bands covered in lights. The route starts at the North Carolina Research Campus parking deck at Main Street and Laureate Way and runs down Laureate Way past Kannapolis City Hall & Police Headquarters. It turns onto West Avenue at the Gem Theatre and ends at Vance Street. The city's parade page suggests bringing a chair or blanket.

The day has a fixed set of street closures:

  1. 6 a.m. West Avenue closes to through traffic, and on-street parking ends on West Avenue, Laureate Way and Main Street. Cars left on those streets will be towed.
  2. 3 p.m. Main Street closes completely because it's the staging area for bands and floats.
  3. 5:30 p.m. Laureate Way closes.
  4. After the parade All streets reopen as soon as the parade ends.

If you live or park downtown, the 6 a.m. towing deadline matters more than the 6 p.m. start. For Village Park, the timing is simpler. December 12 is a Saturday, so the lights stay open until 10 p.m. and train tickets are sold on site. That leaves time to watch the parade and still ride the train afterward.

Before the season starts

The first holiday-season date on the city calendar comes before the lights. The Old Armor 5K for Heroes starts downtown at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 7. Old Armor Beer Company hosts the race, and it's the final race of the year in the Run Kannapolis series.

The regular carousel and train schedule at Village Park ended after October 18. The Winterland Express season starting November 13 is the next chance to ride.

Three closures are worth putting on the family calendar now: Thanksgiving on November 26, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Bad weather can also close Celebration of Lights on any night. The city's line for updates is 704-920-4344. The season's last night is Wednesday, December 30. That's a weeknight, so you can still reserve train seats for it online if any remain.
